Through the Red Lodge Clearinghouse The Foundation believes that, as imperative as it is to work toward the economic vitality of our rural western communities, development should not compromise the overall integrity of wildlife habitat. On such a balance, a workshop at Red Lodge, Montana gave birth to the Red Lodge Clearinghouse.
The Foundation had gathered an unlikely group of people — ranchers and loggers, conservationists and academics, legislators and agency staff. Some came from Washington, some from state capitals, but most were ordinary people from the rural West who cared deeply about the place where they live and work. All present firmly agreed that the gridlock plaguing land management forestalls improvement in the lives of rural people and threatens the wildlife they share the land with.
Through the Red Lodge Clearinghouse, now a project of the Natural Resources Law Center at the University of Colorado (see www.redlodgeclearinghouse.org), the Foundation is supporting on-going and emerging collaborative initiatives addressing the natural resource challenges confronting Western communities.
